What is Board Certification?

A. A. Emami, D.O., M.D., F.A.C.O.I. is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Board Certification is awarded to individuals by the American Osteopathic Association (A.O.A.) through the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (A.O.B.I.M.). The distinction of being Board Certified in Internal Medicine is achieved by meeting the requirements outlined in the Regulations, Requirements, and Procedures of the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (A.O.B.I.M.). These Regulations, Requirements and Procedures dictate that one may be recognized as being "Board Certified" if he or she meets all of the following minimum requirements:

  1. Be a graduate of an A.O.A. accredited college of Osteopathic medicine.
  2. Applicants who have been out of formal training one or more years must have a valid, unrestricted, and unchallenged license to practice in the state of territory where his/her practice is concluded.
  3. Be a member in good standing of the A.O.A. at the time of application and also at the time of examination and when certification becomes approved.
  4. Be able to show evidence of conformity to the standards set in the Code of Ethics of the A.O.A. if requested.
  5. Demonstrate clinical competence in the practice of Internal Medicine documented by the candidate's program director on the Program Director's Report form.
  6. Have satisfactorily completed an A.O.A. approved postdoctoral training program consisting of 12 months of a medicine track internship followed by 24 months of an Internal Medicine residency or 36 months of an Internal Medicine residency.
  7. Passage of the Certifying Examination in Internal Medicine.

In 2021 (or sooner), A. A. Emami, D.O., M.D., F.A.C.O.I. will likely choose to not maintain his Board Certification with the American Osteopathic Association (A.O.A.) or the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (A.O.B.I.M.) to save money for his patients. Currently the cost of Board Certification (through the A.O.A.) is $683 per year. This does not include the cost of the board examination ($800 per examination) board examination preparation courses (which may exceed $1,500) or other associated costs.
